DLS Summer Camps: The Journey

The roar of drones slicing through the sky above a New York playground might seem like a scene straight out of a sci-fi film. But in reality, it’s just another day at the DLS Summer Camp—a unique initiative brought to life by Drone Logistics Services (DLS). If you’re wondering what drones and kids have in common, well, let me take you on a journey. It’s one that started with a simple yet audacious idea: to democratize drone technology for the next generation.

Drone Logistics Services has always been about more than just business. It’s about creating a movement, one that introduces the magic of drones to people of all ages and backgrounds. Our team at DLS has a certain flair—perhaps a bit of a rebel streak—as we’ve always prided ourselves on being the ones to take the news and knowledge of drones far and wide. We’re not just talking about corporate meetings or industry expos; we mean bringing drones to everyone—young and old.

The brainchild behind this mission is none other than Tied Caldwell, the visionary founder of DLS. One day, he called me, as he often does, with an idea that was as bold as it was unexpected. “I think we need to go to schools and teach kids about drone programming and flying drones,” he said. Now, I’ve known this guy long enough to understand that when he has an idea, it’s not just a casual suggestion—it’s a blueprint for action. But this time, I’ll admit, I was a bit perplexed. How were we going to make kids grasp the complex technology of drones, let alone get them to fly and program these intricate machines?

But then I remembered who I was dealing with. Tied isn’t just a dreamer; he’s a doer. The man who turned DLS from a startup into a company we now revere as an industry pioneer wasn’t going to be daunted by the challenge of reaching a younger demographic. And so, the idea of a summer camp was born.

The Inaugural Flight: 2021

The year was 2021, and the concept of a DLS Summer Camp was still in its infancy. We knew we wanted to kick off in New York—a city synonymous with dreams and possibilities. But securing a venue was easier said than done. As any New Yorker will tell you, real estate in the Big Apple is no joke, especially when you’re looking to host a group of kids for a drone camp. We knocked on several doors and faced more than our share of rejections, and just when we were about to lose hope, a school in Brooklyn opened its doors to us.

The rest, as they say, is history. We were hoping to have a small group of around 5-10 kids—just enough to test the waters. Instead, 25 eager faces greeted us on the first day. We were stunned and, frankly, a little overwhelmed. But it was the kind of challenge we thrive on. Our first camp was a resounding success, proving that there was not only interest but a hunger for knowledge among these young minds.

Building Momentum: 2022

The following year, 2022, we decided to up the ante. We expanded the camp to include both New Jersey and New York, doubling our reach and ambition. This time, we knew we were onto something big. The program was no longer an experiment; it had become a cornerstone of what DLS stands for.

What amazed me most about the 2022 camp wasn’t just the increased turnout—it was the consistency and dedication of the kids who attended. Our programs typically run for two weeks, and from the first day to the last, the enthusiasm never waned. These kids were not just participants; they were pioneers, soaking up knowledge about drone flying, programming, and even some of the more advanced aspects of drone technology like welding and soldering components.

The Vision Behind the Program

At the heart of the DLS Summer Camp is a vision that transcends technology itself. The founder’s intention was clear from the outset: to level the playing field. He wanted to ensure that kids from less advantaged backgrounds had the same opportunities to learn and engage with cutting-edge technology as their more privileged peers.

This wasn’t just about teaching a skill; it was about empowerment. The United States has long prided itself on being a global leader in science and technology. But recent reports, such as one from the Nations Health Journal, have painted a grim picture. The report, published in March, suggested that the U.S. is losing its edge, with 60% of respondents predicting that China will assume the lead in science and technology within five years. This decline in STEM education is not just a statistic; it’s a potential crisis.

If we’re to maintain our leadership and continue to innovate, we need to invest in the next generation—especially those who might otherwise be left behind. That’s where the DLS Summer Camp comes in. Over the past four years, we’ve trained over 400 kids, giving them hands-on experience in drone programming, coding, critical thinking, and teamwork. These are the skills that will shape the future, and we’re determined to make sure that future is bright.

Looking Ahead: The Future of DLS Summer Camps

As we look to the future, one thing is clear: the DLS Summer Camp is here to stay. Our goal is to expand our reach even further, eventually covering the entire country. By 2026, we plan to reach at least 20 cities across the United States, with an additional 20 cities by the end of the decade.

This isn’t just about numbers; it’s about impact. We’re driven by the feedback we receive from parents, guardians, and, most importantly, the kids themselves. Their enthusiasm and growth fuel our passion and commitment. Every camp session is a step toward closing the gap in STEM education and ensuring that every child, regardless of background, has the opportunity to thrive in this rapidly changing world.

Our team of volunteers is growing, too. These dedicated individuals, who often insist on working without pay, are the backbone of our programs. We find ways to compensate them, but their commitment goes beyond monetary reward. They’re driven by the same vision that guides us all—creating a future where technology is accessible to everyone.

Overcoming Adversity: The 2024 Edition

The 2024 DLS Summer Camp was poised to be our biggest yet, with planned visits to both New York and New Jersey. But as with any great journey, we faced unexpected challenges. In May, Tied Caldwell suffered a muscle sprain that left him bedridden for four weeks. For someone as hands-on and passionate, this was a significant setback. The idea of delegating the camp’s responsibilities didn’t sit well with him; he wanted to be there, in the trenches, guiding and inspiring the kids.

Thankfully, by the end of June, Tied’s condition had improved. His determination to see the camp through was nothing short of heroic. With the support of the DLS team and a timely deal from the City of Houston, we were able to move forward with our plans. The 2024 camp saw an average of 70 pupils each day—a record for us. The energy, engagement, and success of the camp were palpable, and it reinforced why we do what we do.

Who We Are

Drone Logistics Services is a black-owned business based in Houston, Texas. Our core services include drone repairs, gaming computer repairs, photogrammetry, real estate surveys, and training for the Part 107 test, which certifies drone pilots. But we’re more than just a service provider; we’re educators and advocates for the future of technology.

We understand that many of our clients are looking to start their businesses in drone technology but don’t know where to begin. That’s why we’ve developed courses that not only teach the technical skills needed to operate drones but also provide insights into the business side of the industry. Our goal is to empower our clients to turn their passion for drones into a profitable enterprise.

At DLS, we believe in the power of technology to transform lives. And through our summer camps, we’re ensuring that the next generation is equipped with the skills and knowledge they need to take flight—both literally and figuratively. The journey has just begun, and we’re excited to see where it leads.
